Legendary Treatment for Difficult Delivery

Because of the empirical way of medical practice in TCM, many inconceivable drugs and treatments came into being.

One tale concerns a simpleton whose father was a famous TCM doctor. One day, a woman was having difficult delivery, and someone came for help. It happened that the father was not home, so the simpleton was brought to the lying-in woman as a last resort. After all, his father was a famous doctor, so he must knew something about it.

The simpleton bought a gong on his way and arrived at the woman’s bed.

Gong

He struck the gong three times, and the child was delivered crying out loud.

People exclaimed and said: “What a miracle doctor!” His father was back, heard about it and got very confused, so he asked: “Which school of medicine were you practicing?

The simpleton replied: “Whenever theatrical troupe comes, and as soon as hear the sound of the gong, it’s always the children who run the fastest. This one was no exception.

Special Duel Style and Treatment of Hematemesis

I once heard a veteran TCM doctor talk about curative effect of boy’s urine. He said that in the old days there was a special kind of hooligan, with style similar to ancient swordsmen.

Their method of a duel was very unorthodox: the two parties of the duel would grasp the belt of each other in one hand, hold a wooden mallet in the other, and smash at each other for dear life. The head, face and crotch are forbidden areas.

Wooden Mallet

Whoever starts vomiting blood first will lose; or anyone dodging the mallet, even if slightly.

During the duel, someone would have bowl of boy’s urine on standby, and those who vomited blood would immediately drink it up.

Allegedly this could heal the injury by promoting tissue regeneration, as well as dispersing Qi and stasis, according to TCM theory.

Because of this empirical way of medical practice, many inconceivable drugs and treatments came into being.

Severe Fracture Healed in 3 Months

A good friend of mine fell in the shower and broke his ribs. WM doctors suggested to get plaster cast and a sling, which would take a long time.

He wanted it healed sooner, so went to a local TCM doctor, and it did recuperate within a month. I asked the doctor’s name from him- Dr. Zheng.

Soon enough, my brother-in-law was involved in a fight and broke his pinkie. So I took him to Dr. Zheng, who examined it and said:

It’s no big deal- nothing but bone fracture. If you took my medicine, it will heal in a month.

It did not hurt while the medicine was applied, and within a week the pinkie could move a bit.

In weeks, the pinkie was completely healed and nimble as ever.

Fracture

However, I secretly told my sister-in-law:

Let’s be safe and try stay away from him; he is so arrogant.

Dr. Zheng does not have a medical diploma, and even looks down on those with one. If anyone broke his bones and did not come to see Dr. Zheng first, he would get angry and be reluctant to treat the guy, and even become sarcastic about it:

” I am only a country doctor, I wouldn’t dare to hold you up. Why don’t you still go back to those professors and specialists?

Unfortunately another 6 months passed and my brother-in-law got drunk and fell into a sewage well. When rescued, he was swollen all the way from the ankle to crotch, and could not walk at all.

When carried to Dr. Zheng’s, my brother-in-law was crying out loud due to severe pain. The doctor checked him, and quoted a price for each leg.

My brother-in-law asked: “Shouldn’t I get a wholesale discount, because it’s two legs instead of one? Can you do better than that?

“Good sport! In such pain and still bargaining! I’ll give you a discount.”

His treatment was to pinch the broken bones together, and apply homemade medicinal mud.

The first ‘ingredient‘ of the mud is to smash a young rooster dead on the ground, then mash it and mix with several other secret recipes.

I asked my in-law how it feet. He said he could clearly feel tightness of his legs, and the blood and veins started roaming at night.

In about 6 weeks he could inch forward with support of his hands.

In 2 months, he started walking.

In 3 months, he could walk fast as ever and started going from one pub to another.

Treatment for Slow Growth

In my hometown, those of small stature during adolescence would go to a TCM doctor.

He would cut up an area in their palm between index and middle finger, and take out some small, yellow stuff similar to chicken gizzards. Then the person would grow taller.

It is pretty effective, many people have tried it and saw good result, including myself- My parents are no more than 5’5″, but I am over 5’9″. But nobody could provide a good explanation.

Later I found a possible explanation online:

Modern medical research believes that acupuncture at Sifeng (EX-UE 10) acupoint can increase saliva secretion and effect of saliva amylase, and increase content of trypsin, pancreatic amylase, and pancreatic lipase in the intestines, thus enhancing digestive function.

For those with malnutrition and rickets, after acupuncture at the Sifeng acupoint, it was found that content of both serum calcium and phosphorus increased, while alkaline phosphatase activity decreased.

As a result, the product of calcium and phosphorus increased, which helps bone development and growth in children.

Girl Falling from 4th Floor Stairs

The other day I fell the stairs from the 4th floor, tumbling down all the way and with head down. For a second I thought it would probably be my last moments in the world.

Then I found myself unable to move, and felt falling apart.

It happened that I had another bad fall just a week ago, where I landed on my buttocks and the injury had not healed.

Fortunately, I fell not far from where a senior TCM doctor lived. Since I couldn’t move, I was carried into his house.

Seeing the old doctor, my tears could not help rolling down- it never hurt like this in my life.

“Absolutely I am going to be paralyzed.” I thought.

My arms, waist, and legs all hurt as if hammered a thousand times.

My poor little bones ~~

But the doctor did not say a word; he gave me some pills while smiling at me crying out loud.

A minute passed, I felt an unspeakable warmth flowing through all my pain points.

There was a little bit numbness, and suddenly it didn’t hurt anymore.

Even the butt that had been hurting for days stopped hurting.

That’s my experience- entered lying and came out walking.

Then I spent the next day roaming on the street all day.

Breast Lipomas Reduced without Surgery

During one of my physical exam, breast lipomas were found (one on the left and two on the right). They were so big that can be easily felt by hands.

Lipoma

WM doctors said surgery was the only option, but no girl would like to be operated on the breast and leave ugly scars.

I adamantly rejected my parents’ advice of going with the surgery (which would almost surely relapse as far as I know).

Because of my understanding of TCM, I went to see a TCM doctor, but my hopes were not high. I was so blessed to have met a solid doctor; he made me a prescription through only inquiry and inspection, without even taking my pulse.

The most amazing part is later when I was away, I could inquire him via Instant Message and Facetime, and he would write out another prescription.

It is the second dose now. I can feel clearly by touch that the lipomas are only 1/3 of the original size, and have softened.

With such progress, I think I’ll be cured after another dose.

I am deeply grateful to the doctor. In fact I also saw other TCM doctors in the past, and many said they were powerless. But if encountering the right doctor, it would indeed work like a charm!

Moxibustion and Back Pain

The following is an article from ‘Yahoo Lifestyle Austrailia‘, which shows a real case of moxibustion working on pack pain.

“I Tried Moxibustion, and It Calmed My Anxiety and Back Pain Immediately!”

An acupuncturist sticks pieces of burning plant roots on my shins and the bottoms of my feet to help calm my back pain and anxiety – it’s a practice called moxibustion, and it’s my favorite form of self-care.

If you’re unfamiliar with the technique, moxibustion is the warming and stimulating of acupuncture points using moxa, a dried Asian herb derived from the mugwort root, and is often incorporated into acupuncture sessions. According to Donna Hernández, a licensed acupuncturist and board-certified herbalist at the Yinova Center in New York City, the 2,000-year-old practice can improve the circulation of blood flow and Qi (what is believed to be one’s life force or energy), as well as aid in relieving pain, fatigue, anxiety, infertility, and digestive disorders.

I stumbled upon moxibustion thanks to a Google search deep dive in a time of desperation. Completely defeated by my mental and physical aches, a slew of holistic-based articles led me to the practice. Now, I always finish my 90-minute sessions with five minutes of moxibustion.

Although moxa comes in many forms, from balms to incense to cones, my acupuncturist uses stick-on moxa, which looks as though the end of a cigarette was placed on a small metal bolt, so it stands up straight. My acupuncturist sticks one onto the center of each of my shins and one at the bottom of both my feet. She then lights the ends and lets them burn down towards my skin.

Once lit, the moxa sticks can cause slight pain in the literal heat of the moment. The root is on fire, so you feel a burning sensation as it shortens toward your skin – but it’s worth it. Trust the process. It shouldn’t actually burn your skin, so always speak up if it gets too painful.

Suspended Moxibustion

Hernández clarified that the moxa is placed on the bottom of your feet to warm the Kidney 1 acupuncture point, a calming and nourishing point that helps ease the spirit of the body, ground the patient, and pull out inflammation.

The point below your knees on the center of your shin is called the Stomach 36 point, which is known to aid back pain, Hernández said.

Within the first few seconds of the five-minute practice, the earthy, sage-like smell of the burning root fills the room, and you feel a wave of relaxation come over your body. After, my mind is still, my back is pain-free, and I seemingly float home.

This elevated state of relaxation lasts for a few hours after my acupuncture session, but I do feel that my anxiety and back pain is milder for the following week.

Hernández noted that moxa is very powerful and drying, so it’s important to use sparingly. Although you can partake on your own, it’s wise to learn best practices from a certified acupuncturist first, as moxibustion therapy varies from person-to-person depending on what needs to be remedied.

I have yet to try any holistic treatment that compares to moxibustion; the immediate relief I’ve felt is unparalleled to other practices. I am forever grateful to Google and my acupuncturist for the introduction. Now, I know how to instantly reset my body and mind when I need it most.

What Is Typhoid Fever in TCM?

Simply speaking, typhoid fever in TCM is a disease when cold was not completely eradicated. Usually people will ask: “A cold is caused by a virus. What does it have to do with chill/cold?”

Western Medicine believes that colds are caused by viral infections. Therefore, antibiotics must be used to kill these viruses in order to treat the cold. Chinese Medicine practitioners believe that colds are caused by chill/cold, which does not come off too scientific according to Western Medicine. Therefore, many people think that it is impossible for TCM to cure colds.

Is cold caused by viruses? I think this answer is yes and no. I suggest that everyone do an experiment. If you live in San Francisco, try move your bed next to the window at night, open the window, wear only underwear, don’t put any covering on the body, and last for one night. San Francisco’s nights are usually very cold, and after getting up the next day, you will immediately have running and stuffy nose, or even as severe as a fever; this is the typhoid fever. So now is it only relevant to viruses?

Someone may ask why sometimes one member of the family catches a cold and the others would start getting it too. Isn’t it obviously caused by a virus?

In fact, according to TCM cold can be caused by two factors: 1) It was observed that some colds were caused by viruses in ancient times, which was called “plague”. Most plagues CAN be treated by “Seasonal Febrile Disease Theory” of TCM, and with good results. 2) Some colds, however, are caused by exposure to chilly environment.

Therefore, if an individual simply suffers from a cold caused by chill, it can be treated according to theory of “Treatise on Febrile Diseases”; if a cold is caused by plague (virus infection), and the symptoms are the same as typhoid fever, it can still be treated according to theory of “Treatise on Febrile Diseases”. If the symptoms are different, then treatment based on “Seasonal Febrile Disease Theory” would be effective.

TCM Treatment Is ‘Digging up Diseases’

At the time an individual is born, theoretically he is completely healthy. Gradually during the course of his growth, many colds are caught; these colds usually do not disappear because of taking of antibiotics, thus hide deep inside the body. After tens or sometimes hundreds of such cases, eventually the ‘Yin’ disease is formed inside the body, as was mentioned in the “Treatise on Febrile Disease”.

Through taking of Chinese Traditional Medicine (CTM), or herbs, the body is able to shake up and expel these diseases, and all the old diseases begin to reappear- those who caught cold in the past would catch it again; those who got pneumonia before would get it again. Facing these unresolved diseases again is a normal phenomenon during treatment.

Therefore, the majority of the illnesses ‘cured’ by western medicine only appear so, but in actuality they ‘hide’ inside the body. It is only through proper treatment of TCM can the old illnesses be dug out and cured, thereby reaching the ultimate goal of eradication. This is the rationale behind ‘Treatment is digging up diseases’.

On the other hand, such treatment method also varies case by case. For young adults, diseases can and must be ‘dug up’, so that complete rehabilitation could be achieved . For middle-aged and elderly, however, it is a different story. Severe confusion would arise if all past diseases that had been accumulated for decades were dug out all at once, unless the patients and their families could fully understand the rationale behind the treatment. Therefore it is sometimes better to leave the diseases intact rather than treating them.

No matter how serious the dug-out diseases, eventually they would exit the body. The cold could be rapidly expelled through take of CTM, or natural rehabilitation could be achieved with adequate rest. It is, however, strongly advised against taking of western medicine again.

Many people, upon digging up of all their diseases, would feel extreme fatigued and drowsy, which is result of repayment of the debt of accumulated sleep deprivation. As long as enough sleep is guaranteed, rehabilitation is only a matter of time. It is strongly advised against take of any stimulant in order to counteract these phenomenon.

When Should One See TCM Physician & What Is True TCM Physician?

When Should One See TCM physician

One should see a TCM doctor when illness is still at its initial stages, but not when the disease has already been confirmed through examination by Western Medicine and symptoms such as hyperthyroidism are already present, or the end phase of a disease; assistance of TCM should be sought when signs or symptoms first appear, such as insomnia, thirst, afraid of cold, fatigue, dizziness and palpitation, etc. In a word, when  diseases has not developed into the stage that can be detected by  Western Medicine.

Upon encountering a disease, first it is necessary to review personal life style and emotions of the patient, next to see a TCM physician (treatment at the phase of meridian disease), and then see doctor of Western Medicine (treatment at the phase of substantive organs disease) when it is beyond the expertise of TCM. This is the proper order of treatment.

If when minor ailment first appeared, immediately administer anodyne and antibiotics, this can only lead to disease of greater severity, and eventually all medicine would fail to work; this is an extremely irresponsible way of treatment.

What Is True TCM Physician?

In the United States, training of a Western Medicine doctor takes at least 7 years, not to mention years of internship before becoming a doctor. On the other hand, only about 4 years is required for the training of a TCM doctor, and after passing certain exams, one can open practice in many of the states, although they can only be called as ‘acupuncturist’.

There are many authentic TM physicians who master the essence of TCM treatment principles, and are able to treat patients at their fingertips. At the same time TCM physicians do differ greatly in their skill level and area of expertise. So extra caution is needed in the selection of TCM physicians.

Simply put, we should look for doctors whose practice is based on traditional TCM knowledge. In the United States, a large number of TCM physicians were originally doctors of Western Medicine in other countries, but unable to become doctor of Western Medicine in US, and instead  became TCM physician after only a few years’ of study. However, because of their familiarity with Western Medicine, they are most  welcomed by the U.S. patients.

Naturally their model of treatment is still based on Western Medicine- administering antibiotics to patients with cold, and anodyne to patients with pain; almost no TCM element is involved in their practice.
