Moxibustion Treats Hay Fever / Allergy

The following content is from exchange on a blog of a retired TCM doctor.

Question:

Ever since consulting you last time, I have been performing moxibustion about 60 to 90 minutes per day, with no interruption of more than 3 days, except during business trips.

I have experienced the following improvements.

1. Hay fever / allergy

I was consulting you mainly for my nose problems.

Every winter and spring my nose would be itchy, with feeling of pressing pain on the cheeks, plus gum pain and headache.

I have been performing excessive moxibustion on the following acupoints: Yingxiang ( LI 20 ), Yintang (EX-HN3) , Taiyang(EX-HN5) and Ashi (the pain spots), for a total of 30-40 minutes. If I felt particularly uncomfortable, I would increase the moxibustion time.

It is not convenient to moxibust on Feishu (BL13), so I did cupping instead, and waited for blisters to form. The situation is now under control, and my discomfort has reduced significantly. You mentioned that it would take 2-3 years of moxibustion to heal rhinitis, so I am going to continue doing it. When the weather gets warm, I would add Feishu acupoint to the moxibustion.

Allergy
Allergy

The allergy has been plaguing me for over a decade, where I saw innumerable TCM and Western Medicine doctors, and took hundreds of doses of Chinese herbal medicines, but with little result.

As a last resort, I turned to the internet and was lucky to stumble on your blog, and got to know you, a doctor who help others selflessly. Then I began the journey of self-treatment.

I think the principle of moxibustion is to improve body function of one’s own. When the body is in good health, the diseases will be gone. This is a long journey, so everyone must be patient and persistent.

I read that some fellow patients who tried moxibustion only for a few days and wondered why it didn’t work. After all, moxibustion is no miracle worker, and some chronic diseases does take time.

I believe success belongs to the persevering.

Answer:

From the treatment experience shared by this patient, we can understand pretty well. As he mentioned:

” This is a long journey, so everyone must be patient and persistent.

I read that some fellow patients who tried moxibustion only for a few days and wondered why it didn’t work. After all, moxibustion is not miracle worker, and some chronic diseases does take time. I believe success belongs to the persevering.

Furthermore, his acupoint selection, time, experience, meridian channeling, diet, exercise, etc. are all very detailed. Here I want to share my understanding of the saying “Seven years’ of illness calls for three years of moxibustion“, which should bear two levels of meaning.

  1. It means after falling ill for 7 years, it requires treatment by aged moxa of 3 years, such moxa is not too dry, relatively gentle, and works great on heat penetration at acupoints.
  2. It means for a disease of 7 years, it requires consecutive treatment of moxibustion for 3 years. It tells us the importance of persistence, and treatment with moxibustion is not overnight.

Efficacy of moxibustion on leg pain

Question:

My mother is 79 years old and is recently plagued by leg pain. She has been taking medicines and using plasters but to no avail. 10 days ago I told her to perform moxibustion on the Zusanli point with moxa stick and stop taking medicines. Her pain was gone within a week!

This method is truly amazing. In addition, I am in my 40s and still have acne on my chin and neck. I have been performing moxibustion at the Guanyuan point, and the acne stopped forming within days. This is so cool.

Leg pain

My mother also has skin itching, especially the night after eating meat or fish. May I ask on which acupoints should moxibustion be performed?

She has scar constitution, and is left with scars from an operation. Can moxa sticks be used on her scars?

Answer:

Hi. Some people often think moxibustion is mysterious, but it is actually pretty simple. As long as you give it a try, you will experience its magical effect.

This is not me bragging, but friends coming to my blog sharing their experiences and bringing us confidence.

Moxibustion is simple because practically everyone could do it, and most cases is performed locally. For example, your mother suffers from the leg pain. The acupoint for moxibustion is the Zusanli point, as well as the affected area. If it wasn’t any of the serious leg diseases, you would see improvements soon.

As far as scar constitution is concerned, not only can moxibustion be performed at area of the scar, but also the scar would gradually decrease.

For the itchiness, the following acupoints could be chosen: Chize, Xuehai, Dazhui, Feishu, Shenque, Guanyuan, and Zusanli.

Head Sore Gone in Hours by Plaster

Due to uncertainty of TCM, good doctors are hard to come by. The same medicine may be useless for one doctor, but become magical life-saving elixir in the hands of another.

When I was still in high school, a sore boiled on my head in a winter, which was itchy and unbearable. Just as I was ready to go to hospital and have it surgically removed, my dad said: “That’s stupid, why don’t you go to Uncle Lang’s house and ask for a dose of plaster, it will surely work!

Plaster

Worried that the wound may scare other passengers, I covered the wound in the head with one hand, and went to uncle Lang’s house. He was actually not a doctor, but his mother.

There had been generations of TCM doctors in uncle Lang’s family, but it came to a stop at his mother’s generation.

The reason was her father had given birth to 6 daughters in a row, and did want to keep trying.

The traditional idea was that medical skills could be passed to male heirs only, but no female. As an alternative, the Master had to secretly teach each of his daughters one special prescription before she got married. It may not make a fortune, but enough to make ends meet.

Thanks to this prescription, the old lady raised all her children and paid for several decent weddings.

Because the friendship spanning for generations between our families, the lady was quite straightforward with me, and asked: “Do you want to make it quick or slow? There are issues with going fast, and benefits with going slow.

“Of course I want it fast, It hurts like hell, and it’s no fun to keep a wound like this on myhead.”

She further explained said if going slow, a plaster would be applied to slowly pull out the pathogens, leaving behind no boil scars. If fast, it will be gone in the same day, but with the risk of scar.

I still want to get rid of it fast.

Are you sure?

Yes, I am certain.

She took out a green plaster, heated it till soften, and then put on my wound, soon pus and blood started to come out.

On my way home, it made quite a scene on the bus- people looked at me like a monster. I had completely no idea the plaster would work so quickly.

But soon the pain stopped-only a bit itchy, there’s a refreshing feeling in the affected area. Later, there was a boil scar, but very small, and it healed over time.

Legendary Treatment for Diarrhea and Urine Retension

Diarrhea

There was once a patient with serious diarrhea for days. No medicine could help, not even the simpleton’s father. So the simpleton was invited.

He fetched a few corn hearts, crushed them, cooked in soup, and fed the soup to the patient. Miraculously the diarrhea stopped.

His father wondered: “Why did you do this?

The simpleton replied: ” Don’t you see all corks of oil bottles and cans in the village are made of corn heart? If it could plug those, anus would be nothing.

His father sighed happily: “What a magical skill!

Corn hearts

Urine Retension

One day, the simpleton’s father was unable to urinate. He tried a lot of medicines on himself but to no avail, and he had to ask for his son’s opinion.

The simpleton said: “That’s easy.”

He carried his dad on the back and started running; after about two miles they arrived at some reed mashes, and simpleton dashed into it. Soon he was covered all over with muddy water.

Reed Mashes

His father suddenly felt an urge to urinate, and relieved himself even before coming off his son’s back.

The father shook his head and was very confused.

The simpleton said: “Dad, don’t you see that large livestock like donkeys, horses, and mules all dive into the reeds and pee after coming a long journey downhill?

Legendary Treatment for Difficult Delivery

Because of the empirical way of medical practice in TCM, many inconceivable drugs and treatments came into being.

One tale concerns a simpleton whose father was a famous TCM doctor. One day, a woman was having difficult delivery, and someone came for help. It happened that the father was not home, so the simpleton was brought to the lying-in woman as a last resort. After all, his father was a famous doctor, so he must knew something about it.

The simpleton bought a gong on his way and arrived at the woman’s bed.

Gong

He struck the gong three times, and the child was delivered crying out loud.

People exclaimed and said: “What a miracle doctor!” His father was back, heard about it and got very confused, so he asked: “Which school of medicine were you practicing?

The simpleton replied: “Whenever theatrical troupe comes, and as soon as hear the sound of the gong, it’s always the children who run the fastest. This one was no exception.

Severe Fracture Healed in 3 Months

A good friend of mine fell in the shower and broke his ribs. WM doctors suggested to get plaster cast and a sling, which would take a long time.

He wanted it healed sooner, so went to a local TCM doctor, and it did recuperate within a month. I asked the doctor’s name from him- Dr. Zheng.

Soon enough, my brother-in-law was involved in a fight and broke his pinkie. So I took him to Dr. Zheng, who examined it and said:

It’s no big deal- nothing but bone fracture. If you took my medicine, it will heal in a month.

It did not hurt while the medicine was applied, and within a week the pinkie could move a bit.

In weeks, the pinkie was completely healed and nimble as ever.

Fracture

However, I secretly told my sister-in-law:

Let’s be safe and try stay away from him; he is so arrogant.

Dr. Zheng does not have a medical diploma, and even looks down on those with one. If anyone broke his bones and did not come to see Dr. Zheng first, he would get angry and be reluctant to treat the guy, and even become sarcastic about it:

” I am only a country doctor, I wouldn’t dare to hold you up. Why don’t you still go back to those professors and specialists?

Unfortunately another 6 months passed and my brother-in-law got drunk and fell into a sewage well. When rescued, he was swollen all the way from the ankle to crotch, and could not walk at all.

When carried to Dr. Zheng’s, my brother-in-law was crying out loud due to severe pain. The doctor checked him, and quoted a price for each leg.

My brother-in-law asked: “Shouldn’t I get a wholesale discount, because it’s two legs instead of one? Can you do better than that?

“Good sport! In such pain and still bargaining! I’ll give you a discount.”

His treatment was to pinch the broken bones together, and apply homemade medicinal mud.

The first ‘ingredient‘ of the mud is to smash a young rooster dead on the ground, then mash it and mix with several other secret recipes.

I asked my in-law how it feet. He said he could clearly feel tightness of his legs, and the blood and veins started roaming at night.

In about 6 weeks he could inch forward with support of his hands.

In 2 months, he started walking.

In 3 months, he could walk fast as ever and started going from one pub to another.

Treatment for Slow Growth

In my hometown, those of small stature during adolescence would go to a TCM doctor.

He would cut up an area in their palm between index and middle finger, and take out some small, yellow stuff similar to chicken gizzards. Then the person would grow taller.

It is pretty effective, many people have tried it and saw good result, including myself- My parents are no more than 5’5″, but I am over 5’9″. But nobody could provide a good explanation.

Later I found a possible explanation online:

Modern medical research believes that acupuncture at Sifeng (EX-UE 10) acupoint can increase saliva secretion and effect of saliva amylase, and increase content of trypsin, pancreatic amylase, and pancreatic lipase in the intestines, thus enhancing digestive function.

For those with malnutrition and rickets, after acupuncture at the Sifeng acupoint, it was found that content of both serum calcium and phosphorus increased, while alkaline phosphatase activity decreased.

As a result, the product of calcium and phosphorus increased, which helps bone development and growth in children.

Girl Falling from 4th Floor Stairs

The other day I fell the stairs from the 4th floor, tumbling down all the way and with head down. For a second I thought it would probably be my last moments in the world.

Then I found myself unable to move, and felt falling apart.

It happened that I had another bad fall just a week ago, where I landed on my buttocks and the injury had not healed.

Fortunately, I fell not far from where a senior TCM doctor lived. Since I couldn’t move, I was carried into his house.

Seeing the old doctor, my tears could not help rolling down- it never hurt like this in my life.

“Absolutely I am going to be paralyzed.” I thought.

My arms, waist, and legs all hurt as if hammered a thousand times.

My poor little bones ~~

But the doctor did not say a word; he gave me some pills while smiling at me crying out loud.

A minute passed, I felt an unspeakable warmth flowing through all my pain points.

There was a little bit numbness, and suddenly it didn’t hurt anymore.

Even the butt that had been hurting for days stopped hurting.

That’s my experience- entered lying and came out walking.

Then I spent the next day roaming on the street all day.

Breast Lipomas Reduced without Surgery

During one of my physical exam, breast lipomas were found (one on the left and two on the right). They were so big that can be easily felt by hands.

Lipoma

WM doctors said surgery was the only option, but no girl would like to be operated on the breast and leave ugly scars.

I adamantly rejected my parents’ advice of going with the surgery (which would almost surely relapse as far as I know).

Because of my understanding of TCM, I went to see a TCM doctor, but my hopes were not high. I was so blessed to have met a solid doctor; he made me a prescription through only inquiry and inspection, without even taking my pulse.

The most amazing part is later when I was away, I could inquire him via Instant Message and Facetime, and he would write out another prescription.

It is the second dose now. I can feel clearly by touch that the lipomas are only 1/3 of the original size, and have softened.

With such progress, I think I’ll be cured after another dose.

I am deeply grateful to the doctor. In fact I also saw other TCM doctors in the past, and many said they were powerless. But if encountering the right doctor, it would indeed work like a charm!

How do I evaluate my level of health when no symptoms of disease has been observed?

Here are some ideas:

  1. Sleep
People who can sleep all night usually have good and functioning organs.

  2. Appetite
A normal appetite is to feel hungry at meal times. If you have poor appetite, do not feel hungry or have no desire to eat at all, then there’s a problem.

  3. Defecation
Defecate daily, preferably in the morning. Since 5 to 7 AM is the time when the large intestine meridian operates, which is critical in bowel movement, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine.

  4. Urination
Preferably a minimum of 5 to 7 times a day. Healthy amount of urination is about 400cc to 450cc (about volume of a typical bottled water). Normal color of the urine should be transparent with light yellow.

  5. Thirst
It is normal when you feel thirsty, start drinking and the feeling disappears. However, if someone is always thirsty and keep drinking, yet after e.g. 5 cups of water, the thirst is still unable to be quenched, then it is a sign of illness.

  6. Temperature of hands and feet
When the heart pulsates, most of the generated blood will flow to the organs and muscles, and the remaining to the extremities. If the heart function is impaired, the hands and feet would get colder; if heart is further weakened, they would become ice-cold. Under this circumstance, we need to bring heat back to the hands and feet.
